Whiteley attracts prelets

BCSC 2012: British Land and Universities Superannuation Scheme have agreed ten new deals at the 320,000 sq ft Whiteley shopping centre development in Hampshire, taking prelets to 78% by rent.

The latest lettings by Whiteley Co-Ownership Trust, the joint venture between the two retail property landlords, include River Island (6,400 sq ft), Clarks (4,800 sq ft), The Entertainer (4,000 sq ft), Mamas and Papas (4,000 sq ft), Schuh (3,900 sq ft), Paperchase (1,500 sq ft), Claire’s (1,100 sq ft), Moss (2,100 sq ft) and Costa (2,200 sq ft) on 10-year leases.

Prezzo (2,400 sq ft) has taken a 20-year lease.

M&S, Next and the existing Tesco supermarket have already committed to anchor the £64m development.

Prelets already confirmed include H&M, Boots, JD Sports, Bank, Sports Direct, Frankie & Benny’s and Starbucks. A further 12 shops are in solicitors’ hands.

The shopping centre will comprise 320,000 sq ft of retail space, restaurants, cafés and other facilities and 1,136 car park spaces.

Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management at British Land, said: “Whiteley Shopping Centre is one of only two new schemes opening in 2013 and we are continuing to see strong retailer demand for space.

“The recent lettings continue to prove that Whiteley can deliver what retailers want: the right location, affordable rents and the right type of space in a high-quality environment.”

Cushman & Wakefield, Wilkinson Williams and Davis Coffer Lyons act for the trust.
