Whitbread eyes 6,000 job cuts

Hotel and restaurant operator Whitbread has launched a consultation that it expects will lead to 6,000 job losses across the business.

The Premier Inn owner said the step was “regrettable but necessary” to shore up the business given that market demand is “expected to remain at lower levels in the short to medium-term”.

The cuts, which would affect almost a fifth of the company’s workforce, are likely to come in its hotels and restaurants businesses.

Whitbread announced the consultation in an update on business over the first half of its current financial year. Sales have been “significantly down” due to premises being closed during the lockdown, the company said, but since reopening, accommodation sales have been ahead of the market.
