OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, is coming to London.
The San Francisco-based company said last week it will open its first office outside the US in London, adding that the city’s “vibrant technology ecosystem and its exceptional talent make it the ideal location for OpenAI’s first international office”.
OpenAI UK Ltd has been registered in the UK since last September at a suite in 11-12 St James’s Square, SW1 – along with other companies linked to Vistra Cosec, a UK company that offers corporate secretarial services and acts for OpenAI UK, according to Companies House filings.
Now the company will be hunting for an actual office to house the team it aims to grow. But where to look? Agents will no doubt be clamouring to offer advice, as will developers with space they’re keen to shift.
But OpenAI could simply ask ChatGPT and see what the AI-fuelled chatbot suggests. We did.
Here’s what we put to ChatGPT: “Produce a shortlist of areas of London that OpenAI should consider when choosing a London office. Take into account the kinds of business located in the area, the availability of grade-A offices, transport links and the ‘buzz’ of the neighbourhood.”
And here’s what it replied (with a couple of American spellings “corrected”). “Lively” atmospheres, “exceptional” transport links, “vibrant” tech communities – your friendly neighbourhood office agent couldn’t put this better themselves.
Shoreditch
Shoreditch is known for its vibrant tech and creative scene. It’s home to numerous start-ups, digital agencies and innovation hubs. The area offers a wide range of modern office spaces, including grade-A options. Shoreditch is well-connected with multiple Tube and rail stations, making it easily accessible for employees and clients. The neighbourhood has a lively atmosphere with trendy cafés, bars and street art, creating a vibrant buzz.
Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is London’s major financial district, housing many international banks, financial institutions, and professional services firms. The area boasts modern, high-quality office spaces with excellent facilities. Its transport links are exceptional, with multiple DLR stations and the Jubilee Line providing fast connections across the city. While Canary Wharf is predominantly a business district, it still offers a range of dining options, shops and amenities.
King’s Cross
King’s Cross has undergone significant redevelopment and is now a thriving hub for tech and creative industries. It’s home to Google’s UK headquarters, as well as a host of other tech companies, start-ups, and media organisations. King’s Cross benefits from excellent transport links, with multiple underground and national rail connections. The neighbourhood has a dynamic atmosphere, with an array of restaurants, bars and cultural attractions, including the famous King’s Cross Station and the British Library.
Soho
Soho is renowned for its vibrant entertainment and media scene. It houses many advertising agencies, film and TV production companies and theatres. While grade-A office space may be limited in Soho, there are still modern office options available. Soho is well-served by public transport, with several Tube stations in the vicinity. The area has a bustling atmosphere, with a diverse range of restaurants, bars and nightlife venues, creating a vibrant buzz.
Southwark
Southwark is an area that has experienced significant growth in recent years. It’s home to a mix of businesses, including media companies, design studios and tech start-ups. Southwark offers a range of office spaces, including grade-A options. The area benefits from excellent transport links, with multiple Tube and rail stations nearby. Southwark has a vibrant cultural scene, with attractions such as the Tate Modern and Borough Market contributing to its lively and creative atmosphere.
These areas offer a combination of business relevance, modern office spaces, excellent transport links, and a vibrant neighbourhood ambiance. Considering the specific requirements and preferences of OpenAI, a more detailed analysis and site visits may be necessary to make the final decision.
