Welsh councils will be allowed to cap the number of second homes in their towns and villages, the country’s Labour government has announced.
Under the plan, homeowners who want to offer short-term holiday lets through sites such as Airbnb will also require a licence.
First minister Mark Drakeford said having “too many holiday properties and second homes” did not create “healthy local communities”.
English councils have the power to double council tax bills on second homes not in use or let for at least 70 days per year.
From next year Welsh councils can raise council tax on second homes by 300%. Changes to planning regulations will also create three classes of property: primary home, second home and short-term holiday accommodation. Owners could need permission for a change of use from one class to another.
