Urban Creation gets blessing for Bristol Cathedral scheme

Urban Creation has been given the go-ahead to convert the derelict Pro-Cathedral in Clifton, Bristol, into apartments.

The Grade II listed building will provide 38 apartments while a new block alongside will create another 42 flats and a town house fronting Park Place.

The Pro Cathedral site represents one of the last major redevelopment opportunities in Clifton.

The 1830s Roman Catholic cathedral building has been in steady decline since it was deconsecrated in the 1970s.

It was briefly occupied by the Steiner Waldorf School which moved out in the mid 1990s.

Urban Creation paid £2.1m for the building to Ashfield Land, which had secured an earlier planning consent for a residential-led scheme.

Urban Creation’s new proposals were drawn up by a design team of architects Atkins Walters Webster, conservation architect Richard Pedlar and CSJ Planning Consultants.

Darren Sheward of Urban Creation said: “The Pro-Cathedral site is undoubtedly our most challenging but most interesting project to date.

“We understand that this will be the first time in the UK that a former cathedral has been converted into residential use which makes it all the more exciting.”

Formed just two years ago by directors Sheward and Jonathan Brecknell, Urban Creation has 12 property and investment projects either completed or underway in the Bristol, Bath and Weston area comprising 325 apartments and 40,000 sq ft of commercial space with a combined value of £75m.
