UK Coal property arm Harworth Estates has gained consent for a major mixed-use regeneration scheme close to the former Harworth Colliery site in Bassetlaw, north Nottinghamshire.
The scheme proposes around 1,000 homes, 825,000 sq ft of industrial and warehousing and a 22,000 sq ft retail store earmarked for a national retail operator.
The developments – work on which is expected to start in the second half of next year – will occupy 100 acres of non-operational land on the Harworth Colliery site close to the centre of the town. A further 20 acres will be retained as woodland and public open space areas.
Harworth Estates development director Tim Love: “The council’s approval of our proposals follows positive discussions with a significant number of organisations and the existing local community to establish their needs and aspirations.
“We are very encouraged by the support we have received from Bassetlaw District and Harworth Town Councils, schools and other organisations in the village. The dialogue we have had over the past year or so as the project has developed will continue as we begin to deliver sustainable developments from a project that will be a major boost for the Harworth community and surrounding areas during the construction phase and beyond.”
Since mining ceased at Harworth Colliery in August 2006, UK Coal has retained access to the shafts and pit bottom area on a care and maintenance programme, retaining land needed to reactivate the mine should funding to access around 40m tonnes of coal reserves in an area around 5km from the shafts, become available.
