The pint of milk test: U+I to resuscitate London Fire Brigade’s HQ

Pint-of-milk-test-bannerU+I has revealed plans for the redevelopment of the London Fire Brigade Headquarters at 8 Albert Embankment, SE1.

The scheme will include more than 300 flats and three public squares as well as shops, restaurants and cafés. U+I said the proposals would “re-imagine Lambeth High Street as a place to live, work, shop, eat and spend time”.

The plans will deliver a new fire station and a permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum as well as a hotel with a rooftop restaurant open to the public with views of the Thames and Palace of Westminster. Two residential towers of around 18 to 20 storeys are planned.

In 2011, Native Land failed to gain planning consent for 275 homes and 86,000 sq ft of office space at the site. Then, in 2013, the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority terminated its development agreement with Native Land, ending a six-year partnership.

U+I was appointed development partner earlier this year.
