Travelodge has the last laugh at Lee Hurst’s comedy club

DAM Estates has secured planning permission for a 131-bed Travelodge hotel and comedy club at 231-237 Cambridge Heath Road in Bethnal Green.

The comedy club currently on the site – owned and run by Lee Hurst – will be demolished, to be replaced by another purpose built comedy club, with a seven-storey Travelodge hotel constructed above it.

Construction is set to be completed by February 2012 in time for the Olympic Games.

Located only two tube stops from Stratford, the hotel is likely to become one of Travelodge’s top performing hotels in the capital, helping to bolster Bethnal Green’s offering as a tourist destination.

The granting of planning permission means that Travelodge is on course to be the biggest hotelier in the capital by 2012 with over 7,000 bedrooms.

Paul Harvey, Travelodge managing director for development, said: “I am delighted that Dam Estates and Savills have secured planning permission for the development of a Travelodge hotel in such a prominent location.

“Bethnal Green is only one tube stop from the City and just two from the Olympic site at Stratford. Given this, I fully expect this new hotel to quickly become one of our best performing in the country.”

Savills advised DAM Estates.
