Toronto’s chief city planner to debate merits of urban regeneration

Jennifer-KeesmaatOne has been described as a shrewd policymaker, hell-bent on improving Toronto’s urban landscape with public transport infrastructure. The other a fearsome cost-cutter with a ferocious intellect who brought calm to former London mayor Boris Johnson’s chaotic administration. And the third a veteran of New York city government, credited for taking the long view on regeneration, and a determined approach to delivering affordable housing.

Toronto’s chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat (pictured), Sir Edward Lister, the former deputy mayor London and now special adviser to the UK government’s department for international Trade, and Carl Weisbrod, chairman of the New York City Planning commission, will be debating the merits of urban regeneration at events in Toronto and New York next week.

They will be speaking alongside communities and local government minister Sajid Javid, as well as global investors and expert analysts, at the panel discussions hosted by the department for international trade and Estates Gazette.

The free events are part of an investment mission to North America, including Javid and a delegation of UK real estate developers looking to strike long-term investment deals for the UK.

Other speakers will include:

  • Stephen Taylor, vice-president, real estate, HOOPP
  • Michael Spies, co-head of Europe, head of India, chair of investment committee, Tishman Speyer
  • Camille Douglas, managing director, LeFrak
  • Stephen Down, head of central London and international investment, Savills
