Thurrock approves £1bn Purfleet regen

Thurrock Council has approved Urban Catalyst and Swan Housing’s plans for the £1bn regeneration of Purfleet town centre, Essex.

Councillors unanimously voted in favour of the plans that will see 2,850 homes alongside a 1m sq ft media and TV complex, a medical centre, a primary school, retail, leisure and community facilities.

Half of the homes at Purfleet on Thames will be modular.

Development will also see the rail station upgraded and improvements to the riverside public realm and access.

Purfleet Centre Regeneration signed the £1bn deal with Thurrock Council in 2016.

The developer, which is chaired by Sir Tim Laurence, began as a partnership between Urban Catalyst and L&Q. Swan Housing replaced L&Q at the end of 2017.

Ken Dytor, PCRL founder and executive chairman of Urban Catalyst said: “This development will tap into the power of culture, creative industries and healthy living.”

John Synnuck, chief executive of Swan Housing Association, said: “We will now all work together to create a thriving environment that provides much-needed new homes and services, alongside significant employment and educational opportunities for the local community.”
