Three shortlisted for Bradford Odeon scheme

Three teams of architects and developers have been shortlisted in the design competition for the redevelopment of the former Odeon site in central Bradford.

They are: BioRegional/Quintain, Langtree/Carey Jones and PPG/Dyer.

The shortlisted firms will work with URC Bradford Centre Regeneration and Bradford council to generate plans and costings by December for the landmark site on Princes Way.

The site which comprises a landmark former cinema building and car park on 1.25 acres – is at the heart of Bradford’s cultural quarter, alongside the Alhambra Theatre and the National Museum of Film and Photography.

Marc Cole, director of operations with Bradford Centre Regeneration said, “The shortlisted firms have demonstrated that they share both our confidence in the regeneration of Bradford and our aspirations to establish a new benchmark in the quality of architectural design in the city.”

Langtree and Carey Jones’ proposals include a central atrium providing access to apartments, hotel, and office accommodation.

The development will also feature a roof top restaurant with views of the city plus cafes and retail units.

Bioregional Quintain and Studio Egret West have proposed a scheme that will include apartments, a boutique hotel and eco-studios plus a learning resource centre and a festival hall.

The development will retain the Odeon towers, one of which will serve as a lobby to the hotel while the other will house a restaurant and viewing gallery.

PPG and Dyer have proposed a mixed-use scheme based around a central atrium with residential accommodation, office space, educational facilities, fashion boutique, leisure facilities and a restaurant on the first floor.

The winning design will be selected next year.
