The pint of milk test: plans for London Fire Brigade HQ emerge

Pint-of-milk-test-bannerEmerging plans by U+I for the iconic London Fire Brigade Headquarters at 8 Albert Embankment, SE1, have been revealed in consultation exercises currently taking place.

Over 300 new homes and in excess of 1,000 new jobs will be provided. The creation of three new public squares will be lined by shops, restaurants and cafes. U+I said the proposals will “reimagine Lambeth High Street as a place to live, work, shop, eat and spend time”.

The plans will also deliver a new fire station serving the local community and a permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum, returning to its original location. A hotel with a rooftop restaurant open to the public with views of the Thames and Palace of Westminster will make this a truly mixed-use scheme.

Two residential towers are planned. Although heights are not stated, they are estimated to be around 18 to 20 storeys from the renders.

The site has a long and chequered planning history, with Native Lane failing to gain planning consent for 275 homes and 86,000 sq ft of office space. Plans were refused in 2011. The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority terminated its development agreement with Native Land in 2013, after teaming up with them in 2007.

U+I was appointed development partner earlier this year.
