Transport for London is exploring ideas to repurpose 79 car parks around its stations.
It is inviting proposals from operators in a bid to better utilise the estate. This includes 61 car parks in outer London and 17 outside the capital, which currently provide more than 10,000 parking spaces.
TfL is looking for concepts that support local economic recovery and deliver a greener, cleaner and healthier London.
It has already considered ideas around improved logistics, community hubs, neighbourhood kitchens and urban farms and is calling on the industry for “creative, commercially viable” concepts. It is seeking to engage private sector operators to offer services on sites, not develop the land.
The transport provider is asking interested parties to complete a questionnaire as part of the procurement, with a deadline of 4 December.
TfL is already developing a number of its car parks next to tube stations for affordable housing in joint ventures that also finance station upgrades. Major upcoming schemes include 400 homes with A2Dominion at Hounslow West and plans to develop 450 homes across three car parks in Harrow with Catalyst Housing.
It has sought to unlock its portfolio for development to boost housing and provide capital to plug funding gaps from central government.
Following major revenue losses during the pandemic, TfL turned to the government for support packages, most recently clinching £1.8bn at the start of the month, falling short of the mayor’s demands to cover an anticipated £2bn shortfall for the second half of the year.
