Tesco gains consent for largest South West store

Tesco has gained consent for a redevelopment of the Transit Way District Centre in Plymouth anchored by its largest store in the South West.

The scheme involves the demolition of the existing Tesco store and units, originally designed and developed over 20 years ago by another retailer, and their replacement with an 86,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store and a mixture of A1/A2/A3 units in a new shopping centre/mall arrangement.

Juliette Bishop, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, said: “The popularity of the current Tesco store has resulted in the store trading well beyond the levels for which it was designed.

“This redevelopment will allow us to significantly enhance the shopping experience and service that we are able to offer to our customers, improve the range of goods stocked and increase stock availability, together with delivering highways improvements to the junction of Transit Way and Crownhill Road.”

The replacement district centre will generate approximately 200 additional jobs.

Traffic flow to and from the new shopping centre will be improved through modifying the junction between Transit Way and Crownhill Road, adding two exit lanes and the installation of automated optimal traffic control technology at the signalised junction.

Pedestrian and bus facilities to and from the site will also be improved as part of the development.
