Survey: West End’s public realm needs improving

West-End-rent-THUMB.jpegMIPIM 2016: London’s West End is the most attractive retail destination in Europe and second to New York globally, but it could still be improved, according to a survey.

The Global Retail Destination Index 2016, commissioned by the New West End Company and undertaken by Savills, revealed that there is still work to be done to modernise the West End’s public realm.

Chief executive of the New West End company Jace Tyrell said: “There is room to grow and we are not complacent. What was really telling for us was that public realm is letting us down. There is great demand and turnover. We are going to hit £11bn of spending by 2020. But we have to sort out the streets, we have to work with the public authorities.

“Crossrail is like the Olympic date. You can’t move it. It will be up and running by the end of 2018. By the end of 2019, 60m more people will be coming to the West End. It does focus the mind a bit.”
