Plans have been revealed for an £80m arena and leisure development in Sunderland.
The scheme at Riverside Sunderland would see the site of the former Crowtree Leisure Centre developed as a 10,000-capacity arena that the council hopes could bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city each year. The proposals also include restaurants, a hotel and studios.
So far the project has attracted £20m in funding from the council and the government’s Future High Street Fund, and will move into advanced design stages if the council’s cabinet signs off the proposed budget.
Council leader Graeme Miller said: “The rate of transformation in our city points to the level of regeneration we are delivering for Sunderland, and this development raises that bar higher.”
