St Modwen parks Longbridge plans

St Modwen and regional development agency Advantage West Midlands have submitted four planning applications for the redevelopment of the former MG Rover Works at Longbridge in Birmingham.

The £750m mixed-use development will deliver 10,000 jobs at the emotive 468-acre site.

Subject to planning approval, an additional 1.8m sq ft of commercial will be developed over the next 15 years, together with 1,980 homes.

A new town centre just off the A38 Bristol Road South will form the heart of the community and will be located adjacent to the existing Longbridge train station.

Bill Oliver, chief executive of St Modwen, said: “Longbridge is a site with a world-renowned heritage and today we have moved this area of the Midlands into a new and incredibly exciting era.

“The potential Longbridge has to become a thriving economic hub and a sustainable new residential community is now apparent as we enter this new chapter in its history.”

Plans also include a new learning quarter anchored by an £84m purpose-built educational facility for Bournville College.

Austin Park, a 4.2 acre park at the heart of the town centre, and Rea Park, an 11 acre park at Longbridge West, will provide public open spaces.

The Rivers Rea and Arrow will be opened up again.

The planning applications are a result of long term public consultations and have been submitted to Birmingham council and Bromsgrove council.

The applications respond to the Longbridge Area Action Plan (LAAP) which was submitted to the government in March 2008.
