Southwark is pursuing plans for the redevelopment of the Curry PC World site on Old Kent Road, SE15, which could see the commercial space boosted by over 60%.
The council is intent on raising the provision of employment space in the borough and has identified a demand for large stores as part of its early consultation.
After purchasing the 1.4-acre site in early 2019, the council will now seek to replace and increase the commercial floorspace alongside its housing development.
Southwark has lodged an environmental scoping request for 460 homes and 53,820 sq ft of commercial space. The initial acquisition was subject to the expiry of tenant leases in June 2022.
The development will be backed by borrowing against the housing revenue account. Southwark’s Currys PC World purchase came amid a flurry of acquisitions, as the council seeks to spur development in the former industrial area.
Southwark’s Old Kent Road plan aims to develop two new town centres, 20,000 new homes, and two new tube stations. The regeneration aims to double the number of jobs in the area, with 20,000 jobs in a range of industries. The council hopes to combine new workspace with housing in its developments.
