Slade to lead £50m cancer centre push

Mike Slade, chairman of Helical, is to chair a £50m appeal to build the Clinical Care and Research Centre at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

The appeal board, which met for the first time last week, comprises 16 people appointed by the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Together with its academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research, the Royal Marsden is the largest and most comprehensive cancer centre in Europe.

The Sutton hospital site needs the CCRC to help it meet increasing demand for its services.

The hospital will gain increased capacity and allow researchers to be under the same roof as clinicians, which will lead to accelerated progress in new treatments.

Slade said: “I am both honoured and highly motivated to be chairman of this incredibly important £50m appeal and to have been able to bring such a great team together is very exciting.

“The CCRC is going to equip the Royal Marsden for the future but not only that, by bringing together the greatest minds in cancer treatment, care and research, it will ensure that patients from across the world will benefit from their work and treatment breakthroughs.”

Professor David Cunningham, director of clinical research and a consultant medical oncologist at the Royal Marsden, said: “As a doctor, I see how our clinical research is used every day to provide patients with the very best diagnosis, the latest treatment options and the best possible care. We have both a national and international responsibility for improving cancer care and outcomes for all patients and the CCRC is going to enable the Royal Marsden to continue and enhance its global impact on the future of cancer research, treatment and care.”
