Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle/Gateshead, Liverpool and Oxford have been shortlisted for Capital of Culture 2008.
The outright winner will get extra income estimated at £1bn. A final candidate will be passed on to culture secretary Tessa Jowell next spring.
