Shell Haven refinery to close

Shell Haven oil refinery in Essex is to close by the end of next year.

Despite a £230m upgrade in 1992, the refinery is no longer viable because of low margins and overcapacity in the European refining sector. The company will face a clean-up bill of tens of millions of pounds.

After the closure Shell UK’s refining operation will be concentrated at Cheshire’s Ellesmere Port site.
