Seven plans 1m sq ft Swindon leisure scheme

Swindon Borough Council has signed off plans put forward by property company Seven Capital for a 1m sq ft leisure scheme.

The company, which took control of the North Star site next to Swindon station earlier this year, wants to build an indoor ski centre, IMAX cinema, bowling alley, trampoline centre and hotel, alongside bars and restaurants.

As landholder, the council previously had a development agreement with Moirai Investments to bring the site forward, which was scrapped after several delays and unfulfilled commitments. The ultimate gross development value for the scheme is estimated at £270m, and plans will be lodged with the local planning authority before the end of the year.

The site includes the domed Oasis Leisure centre and sits next to Swindon College. It is expected to launch by 2021.

John Watkins, director at Seven Capital, said: “In recent years, Swindon has become increasingly popular with London commuters. The arrival of a multi-million-pound leisure scheme will only serve to build on this and cement the town’s position as a real hotspot.”

Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is a landmark development for Swindon and a real statement of our economic ambitions for the town. “More than a quarter of a billion pounds will be invested in the site, which will give a huge boost to our local economy.

“I look forward to seeing the plans being submitted before the end of the year so we can push forward on one of the most exciting projects the town has ever seen.”
