Sedgemoor council to build 40,000 sq ft leisure scheme

Sedgemoor District Council is set to develop a 40,000 sq ft leisure scheme on Mount Street in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The council has appointed planning and development consultancy Montagu Evans to advise on the multimillion pound scheme, the exact value of which was not disclosed.

The development, which has already gained outline planning consent, includes a six-screen cinema, gym and four restaurants.

It will be developed on council-owned land, currently occupied by a temporary surface car park.

The council will act as the scheme’s funder and developer.

It previously considered partnering with a developer on the scheme but opted to take the lead to “help support its wider revenue strategy and ensure certainty of delivery”.

Peter Downing, councillor and executive member for infrastructure at Sedgemoor District Council, said: “This is an exciting new venture which invites business investors to share the opportunities of Sedgemoor’s bright economic prospects while safeguarding the character of Bridgwater.”

Simon Hope, partner at Montagu Evans, added: “Instead of appointing a private developer, we were able to advise on an alternative development and delivery strategy that put the council firmly in control of the overall scheme.”

Work is expected to start in summer 2019, The scheme is expected to complete at the beginning of 2021.
