Scottish buildings recognised at BCO awards

The British Council for Offices today announced the winners of its Scottish Regional Awards.

The five winners of the awards ceremony, which was held in association with Estates Gazette, were:

1.      Best Commercial Workplace: 141 Bothwell Street, Glasgow

2.      Best Corporate Workplace: West Lothian Civic Centre, Howden South Road, Livingston

3.      Best Refurbished/Recycled Workplace: Tanfield, 1 Tanfield, Edinburgh

4.      Best Fit-out of Workplace: PricewaterhouseCoopers, 141 Bothwell St, Glasgow

5.      Best Project up to 2,000m2: Buro Happold,57-59 Bread Street, Edinburgh

The sell-out award ceremony, held at The George Hotel in Edinburgh, saw 200 of Scotland’s leading architects and designers rubbing shoulders with Scottish occupiers, and other property professionals.

The judges praised the high quality of entries from across Scotland, commending Glasgow in particular for having two of the five category winners for the first time.

The winning buildings have been hailed as being best practice examples of innovation of design, commercial realism, sensitive urban regeneration (on large and small scales), and in the case of the West Lothian Civic Centre, completely re-engineering the provision of civic services.

Winners from the Regional Awards will go on to compete at a national level in October, and bid to win the ‘Best of the Best’ award.

John Shepherd, BCO judging chair for Scotland, said: “The focus of the BCO awards is to judge buildings from a multi-disciplinary point of view, focussing on aspects such as architectural flair, economic and sustainable construction with fitness for purpose for users of the space.

“We had a very high standard of entries this year from Scotland across both the public and private sectors that have really delivered fantastic workspaces for the end user and I’d like to congratulate our winners.”
