Salford City Council is set to explore the opportunity and benefits of establishing a mayoral development zone, which could pave the way for investment and growth in a key part of the city.
The proposals sit within the wider Western Gateway area, surrounding the Liverpool Road and M62 corridors and along the route of the Manchester Ship Canal.
The opportunity could see thousands of jobs created alongside the economic boost that could be realised from regeneration through the mayoral development zone.
Paul Dennett, Salford city mayor, said: “Realising the full potential of the Western Gateway and Port Salford and driving significant growth and economic benefit has long been a key aspiration for the city council.
“This redevelopment and subsequent growth will not happen overnight, but this step is an important and exciting one as it moves our aspirations for this area of the city closer to becoming a reality. Now this proposal has been approved, myself, along with senior elected members and officers will now begin to develop the mayoral development zone further and explore all the possibilities associated with this approach.”
In 2012, government funding was secured to part finance and deliver Part WGIS, which allowed development of up to 592,000 sq ft at Port Salford. It was completed in 2017. The project was later expanded over the next two phases, with the first phase securing consent for the construction of a multi-modal freight interchange comprising 1.6m sq ft of warehousing with the potential to be the only inland tri-modal port in the UK.
By also including Port Salford phase 2 and development land at the City of Salford Community Stadium, these sites collectively provide an opportunity to deliver 5.5m sq ft of new employment floorspace and £6.4m in business rates.
