Sajid Javid: New right to add two storeys to homes

Families living in built-up areas will be able to add two storeys to their homes under proposals to create a new generation of townhouses.

Sajid Javid, the housing secretary, has announced that the government’s revised national planning policy framework will include the provision to build upwards from existing blocks of flats and houses as well as shops and offices in cities such as London and Manchester.

The extra levels could be added to a property if it remained in keeping with the roofline of other buildings in the area.
