Sainsbury’s Whitechapel scheme cut down in size

Sainsbury’s has submitted revised plans for the major redevelopment of its Whitechapel store, E1.

It follows on from a previous refusal, due to concerns over heritage impacts, notably the views from an adjacent almshouse development. The new scheme will be just nine storeys tall, down from the previous 28 storeys, with 89 fewer homes. The site is adjacent to Whitechapel Crossrail station, which is due to open next year.

The previous scheme of 28 storeys (below) would have provided £6.5m towards mayoral CIL, some of which would have gone towards the construction costs of Crossrail. The tower element has been completely cut from the latest plans.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We have been trading in Whitechapel for over 25 years and want to invest in its future. Our revised plans will deliver a new modern Sainsbury’s store, housing and 400 new jobs. We look forward to a decision in the coming months.”

A new 60,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s as well as around 10,000 sq ft of flexible retail, office and community space is again proposed.

Scheme downsized

March 2015 – 608 homes, 33 storeys

November 2015 – 559 homes, 28 storeys

May 2017 – 470 homes, 9 storeys
