Revised plans for Canary Wharf’s retail pavilion get the go-ahead

Canary Wharf Group has been given permission to move ahead with the transformation of Montgomery Square and Water Street, E14.

CWG’s initial proposals were rejected by Tower Hamlets Council’s planning committee last month. The refusal came amid concerns about road closures, which were expected to “adversely” affect local businesses, cause traffic jams and inconvenience residents.

The updated application no longer includes the complete closure of Water Street to traffic, and instead will allow public vehicles to travel in a west-to-east direction. Other parts of the application, such as a flexible event space and a three-storey, 5,873 sq ft timber-framed retail pavilion and public realm, remain unchanged.

Iqbal Hossain, chair of development committee at Tower Hamlets Council, said: “The committee appreciates that the applicant came with decent and fair changes to the application within the short timeframe.”
