Protestors lose fight to block Edgbaston Cricket Club expansion

The Court of Appeal has refused local protesters a judicial review into the controversial £30m redevelopment of Warwickshire Cricket Club’s Edgbaston Stadium.

MCD Developments – the preferred development partner of the cricket club – is proposing over 50,000 sq ft of new offices, shops and flats, as well as new stands, pavilion, hospitality facility and floodlights at the West Midlands stadium.

Local resident group, the Cannon Hill Neighbourhood Forum, believes the decision to grant planning consent was unlawful due to concerns about noise, glare from floodlights, and additional traffic that will be generated by the project.

The group’s claims have been rejected by senior judges, which means that work on-site can continue with completion due by summer 2011.

Housebuilding and construction group Galliford Try was appointed to build the scheme last month.

Development will take place on former car parks and little-used practice grounds.

Colin Povey, club chief executive said: “The redevelopment of the ground is critical to ensure Edgbaston keeps its competitive edge and remains in the race to secure international matches.”
