One of Britain’s leading organic gardens could be dug up to make way for houses.
Ryton Organic Gardens in Warwickshire, whose patrons include the Prince of Wales, may be put up for sale after the number of visitors fell from 30,000 eight years ago to 8,000.
Its owner, Garden Organic, formerly known as the Henry Doubleday Research Association, said that it was exploring options for the 22-acre site because it was too expensive to run.
Bruton Knowles, a property consultant trying to sell the site, told Horticulture Week that it had “residential development potential” even though it is in the green belt. Developers are said to be interested and offers of £4m are expected.
