Plans submitted to turn Stevenage Debenhams into M&S Foodhall

A 102,000 sq ft former Debenhams department store in Stevenage could be converted into a Marks & Spencer shop and food hall, under planning proposals lodged with Stevenage Borough Council.

The plans, filed by Montagu Evans on behalf of owner Stevenage Retail, would turn Unit 5 at Roaring Meg Retail Park into a two-floor M&S store.

Around 18,000 sq ft of the store would be allocated to the sale of food and drink on the ground floor.

The proposals would mark a return to Stevenage for M&S, which vacated its loss-making store in the area in 2015. Montagu Evans said the retailer had been “working on identifying an appropriate opportunity” for its local comeback.

Debenhams collapsed into administration last year and was subsequently sold to e-tailer Boohoo.
