The New Covent Garden Market Authority will this week submit plans for the regeneration of the south London market.

Plans for the 57-acre site include 2,450 homes, modern new market facilities, a new food centre, commercial space, a hotel and public space.

Two final bids to bring forward the redevelopment were also submitted this week from Bouygues UK and Carlyle Group and St Modwen Properties and Vinci.

Jan Lloyd, CGMA chief executive, said: “The submission of our outline planning application is the culmination of years of analysis and preparation as we work to provide modern new facilities for our tenants and their customers.

“Our vision is for a modern new market, replacing buildings and infrastructure which are now nearly 40 years old, to become a new centre for food and flowers in London. In addition to the new trading space, we will also create ‘The Garden Heart’ bringing a significant new food destination to London combining public space, a visitor centre, restaurants and food related retailing including a public market alongside education facilities, flexible office space for smaller companies and business development services to support this hugely import sector.”

Lloyd added: “The wider regeneration plans will also be a fantastic addition to Nine Elms which will hugely benefit the existing local communities around the site and across the area. We have had strong support from our partners and the local community throughout our pre-application consultations and I now look forward to further discussions with the council and others as we take this through the planning process.”
