Lateral reveals plans for Whitechapel life sciences scheme

Developer Lateral has appointed CMA Planning to work on the proposals for the redevelopment of its flagship site in Whitechapel, E1.

It bought the half-acre site, located next to the Royal London Hospital, in an off-market deal in March last year and has now lodged pre-planning application with the Tower Hamlets Council. Full plans are expected to be submitted in July this year.

There is currently a two-storey commercial building, measuring 61,000 sq ft, on the proposed site. It forms the western edge of the block, the majority of which is comprised of L&Q’s Silk District development, a residential-led mixed-use scheme currently under construction.

Lateral is looking to demolish the existing office building to free up the site for the construction of the 172,000 sq ft lab facility, which will range in size from five to 10 storeys and includes a basement, roof terraces, recycling facilities and cycle parking.

The new scheme seeks to act as a catalyst to accelerate the evolution of Whitechapel’s emerging life science ecosystem, and to support and strengthen the collaboration between Queen Mary University of London, Barts Health NHS Trust at The Royal London Hospital, and the BioEnterprises Incubator.
