Plans in for mega Durham regen scheme

Plans have been lodged for the 15.5ha Aykley Heads Estate scheme, part of Durham County Council’s regeneration masterplan.

Ryder Architecture has filed plans on behalf of the council to redevelop the site into a business park with more than 430,000 sq ft of office space, which will involve the demolition of the council’s headquarters.

The council will move its headquarters into a smaller office site in the city centre, which is also being designed by Ryder.

The business park, which will sit in the city’s world heritage site, will support the growing financial and professional services sector in Durham, according to planning documents.

Cathy Russell, associate at Ryder, said: “Placemaking is at the heart of the masterplan, creating a place where people not only go to work, but want to visit too.  This is not an out of town business park, but a working parkland for everyone to enjoy.”
