House prices in the southeast of the country could have been 25% lower in 2008 and 30% lower last year if officials there had been as willing to grant planning permission as officials in the northeast were, according to research published by the Royal Economic Society.
The resulting increase in the number of properties available would have seen the average price of a house in the southeast fall to £186,600 from £266,600.
