Manchester-based developer Peel Holdings has been given planning permission for the redevelopment of the East Float site at Wirral Waters.

The £4.5bn regeneration scheme in Birkenhead, Merseyside, went before the planning committee last night.

The 15m sq ft scheme includes 13,500 new homes, an “education hub”, leisure uses, 645,000 sq ft of retail space and cultural attractions.

The plans have been in the pipeline for four years, and form the largest urban regeneration project in the UK. An outline planning application was submitted in December 2009.

Peel is hoping to transform the Merseyside docklands into a “waterside destination” to rival New York, Sydney and Shanghai, and has is also planning a £5.5bn Liverpool Waters development on the opposite banks of the Mersey.

Lindsey Ashworth, Peel director, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Wirral Planning Committee has reached this positive decision, it is what the public wanted and what the area is crying out for. This is an historical day for the future of Wirral and the entire City Region”.
