Nuveen: responsible investment and inclusion

Following the success of EG’s Future Female Leaders project in 2019, we have pledged to continue our programme of training the industry’s future leaders with at least two further cohorts in 2020.

Back in partnership with Ginger Public Speaking, a range of women from across the built environment will again be undergoing Ginger’s intense training schedule, learning the skills and building the confidence to be not just a future leader, but a leader today.

Culminating, just like in 2019, with a high-octane and overwhelmingly inspiring event in the summer, this year’s Future Female Leaders project kicks off officially on 20 February. But before we meet this year’s cohorts, let’s hear from some of our key partners on FFL: the second coming.

We believe that there are three main ways we can empower women – early training, access to role models and sponsorship

Why Nuveen is supporting Future Female Leaders

At Nuveen, we have been eagerly anticipating the start of series two of Future Female Leaders ever since watching our candidate Manreet Randhawa and her fellow participants wow the audience at last year’s Grand Finale Summit.

Anyone who attended last year’s event will agree it was a tremendous success, highlighting the talent and potential of our future female leaders. We are, therefore, very excited to be a partner once again and to have the opportunity to put forward one of our own future female leaders.

At Nuveen we believe that creating opportunities that drive and embed gender equality is not just the obvious, right thing to do, but it’s responsible business. Responsible investment and inclusion are pillars of Nuveen Real Estate and, like our parent company TIAA, we are dedicated to creating better outcomes for our investors and the planet, while simultaneously seeking to change the face of the real estate industry. This is, in part, delivered through our commitment to nurturing future female leaders because the industry and our investors lose out on the talents, ideas and abilities of half the population without it.

It’s easy to just speak about the importance of gender equality, but living those values and creating change is more of a challenge. Through Nuveen’s support of Future Female Leaders, we have, together with EG, found a way to drive real change in the industry.

The programme nurtures participants’ skills and confidence by providing them with expert input and a safe space to learn alongside peers from their industry. Through supporting each other and working together to hone their skills related to public speaking, the programme also provides a network where leadership can thrive as those individuals move forward.

We know the importance of these initiatives because of our own similar programmes at Nuveen, such as our Leadership, Education, Advocacy and Development group, mentoring programme, the junior board and office exchange programme. All have the aim of giving young people in our organisation the support they need to grow their confidence, increase their networking skills and harness their leadership potential.

Lack of confidence is one of the biggest reasons women don’t put themselves forward for senior positions, and innovative training initiatives focused on building confidence at an early stage of women’s careers are helpful in empowering them and equipping them to deal with future challenges.

We also believe that providing access to, and networking opportunities with, female role models will help women advance their careers. A strong professional network established early in their career helps advance employees and build their confidence.

Finally, nurturing individuals within the organisation and connecting them to current leaders will ensure that women are sponsored and championed in their advancement.

Sponsoring Future Female Leaders gives us an opportunity to lead the dialogue on gender diversity in a practical way, facilitating networking and development opportunities for professional women in the real estate industry.
