Northumberland Estates gets planning for Stockton-on-Tees retail scheme

Northumberland Estates has been granted permission to build a 97,000 sq ft multi-unit retail scheme in Stockton-on-Tees, with Sainsbury’s and Burger King already confirmed as occupiers.

The development will be located within Wynyard Business Park where permission has been given for 52,000 sq ft of retail space and a 45,000 sq ft trade park. Northumberland Estates estimates a GDV of £20.2m.

Development is due to begin in May 2024, with completion expected a year later.

Proposals include ESG elements such as EV charging points and a battery storage system for energy generated by solar panels.

Sainsbury’s will occupy a 30,000 sq ft unit on the development.

Sainsbury’s property director Patrick Dunne said: “We’re delighted to confirm that we’re bringing a brand new Sainsbury’s supermarket to Wynyard Business Park, representing a major investment in the region and creating new jobs.”

Northumberland Estates senior asset manager Anthony Cape said further occupier announcements are imminent.

Cape said: “We have seen really strong interest from businesses in the trade and retail sectors for this new development, and we hope to be in the position to confirm details of some of those occupiers in the coming months.”
