Vastint Hospitality has secured planning permission for a hotel within the Newcastle Helix development.
Planning permission was originally secured in 2022 for a hotel to be run under Marriott’s no-frills Moxy brand but Vastint submitted a revised design which will also see it run under Marriott’s Tribute brand.
The hotel is proposed as two blocks in a stepped design to lessen visual impact to St James Boulevard, while the taller eight-storey rear block fits with the scale of buildings such as the Lumen and the Spark.
The revised design sees the northern and southern elevations lengthened in the 198-bedroom scheme, with basement space redesigned to accommodate a function/conference room.
Officers at Newcastle City Council planning committee noted that “the proposal would deliver a new hotel to support and enhance the leisure and tourism economy in the urban core and would assist in supporting the continued development of the city as a whole”.
Matt Verlander, director at Avison Young Newcastle, who provided project management and town planning services to Vastint said: “This marks another step towards delivering a great addition to the Helix and also for the city centre.”
