McCarthy bats for Kent retirement village

KCCC retirement village Canterbury 570

Retirement homes specialist McCarthy & Stone is planning a £25m redevelopment of part of Kent County Cricket Club’s Canterbury stadium.

The developer will lodge BDB-designed plans next month for a 60-home retirement village on the Old Dover Road side of the ground.

It is one of 33 new sites, with potential for 1,400 flats, purchased in the past six months since former Persimmon boss John White was appointed chairman.

McCarthy & Stone completed a £527m refinancing in August 2013 and is committed to spending £1.5bn on land and developments by 2018.

The company said this week it would undertake a review of the business. As many as 90 jobs are at risk of redundancy.

White said: “It is difficult to let people go, but for the security of those remaining and for the business going forward, it is absolutely vital.”

McCarthy & Stone is targeting sales of 2,500 homes by 2017. In a trading update this week, it said it was on track to secure 659 legal completions – a 30% increase on last year.
