Market wrap: Countryside climbs to record levels

Housebuilder Countryside saw its share price exceed pre-pandemic levels today, climbing to a record high of 541p.

The embattled housebuilder this week announced a new chair amid rising pressure from activist investors. It recorded the sharpest gains on the FTSE 250, ending the session up 5%.

In a generally positive day for housebuilders, Crest Nicholson jumped by 3.2%, with Redrow rising by 2.8% and Vistry up 2.5%.

The FTSE 100 rose by 0.6% to 6,984 and the FTSE 250 ended up 0.5% at 22,472.
