Market wrap: British Land and Landsec rally on reopening prospects

British Land and Landsec led the FTSE 100’s top risers today, as the prospect of non-essential stores reopening in April continues to boost sentiment.

Listed landlords with significant exposure to retail have been making gains since prime minister Boris Johnson yesterday unveiled the government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Shares in British Land rose 5.4% to end the session at 501.2p, while Landsec’s stocks rose by around 4.5% to 655.5p.

Community retail and leisure landlord NewRiver REIT recorded the day’s biggest real estate rise, up 8.1% to finish the day at 104p.

Leisure stocks also performed well, with Restaurant Group’s shares up 9.9% to 111.4p and Cineworld Group up by 9.4% at 96.4p.

Overall, the FTSE 100 closed at 6,625.9 points, up 0.2%, while the FTSE 250 was at 21,057 points, up 0.4%.
