Market Update: The rise of fast food

The rise of fast food outlets is having a positive impact on high street vacancies.

In the latest monthly Market Update report from Estates Gazette, the Local Data Company’s Matthew Hopkinson says: “We have seen an eight fold increase over generic openings on the high street and across retail parks and shopping centres in this particular sector of cafes and fast food takeaway, so I think it will have an impact where it’s allowed to have an impact.”

Hopkinson also reveals how town centres will keep changing.

“The omni-channel environment is growing, the role of internet spending is growing and therefore you need large stores, and the interesting one to watch is the word ‘showrooming’ which has become the media buzzword in the last three or four weeks.”

Showroomoing refers to the rise of large flagship showroom outlets such as the latest store models revealed by HMV and Jessops.

In this month’s Market Update, EG also speaks with BNP Paribas Real Estate’s head of Scotland Gavin Willins about the health of the office investment market there.
