Manchester council seeks funding for Sportcity clear-up

Manchester city council is seeking £18.3m in order to finance groundworks on a major development site around Manchester City Football Club’s stadium.

The 17-acre Sportcity site, adjacent to the City of Manchester Stadium, is contaminated from its industrial past.

The council has secured £674,000 from the Northwest regional Development Agency and the Homes and Communities Agency, but says that the clean-up will cost £19m in total.

The European Regional Development Fund is understood to have put £5m towards the cost, with the HCA expected to add another £2.7m.
