Major fire guts Primark store in historic Belfast building

A senior fire officer has described the fire that gutted a Primark store in Belfast as one of the biggest they have battled in a number of years.

More than 100 firefighters tackled a blaze at the historic building with crews at the scene all day after the fire broke out about 11am and engulfed the five-storey Bank Buildings in the city centre, which had been undergoing a multimillion-pound refurbishment.

Staff and shoppers were ordered to leave Primark after smoke could be seen billowing from the roof and flames a height of 15m were seen right across the city skyline.
