MIPIM 2016: The number of residential towers being submitted across London has smashed through the 100 barrier for the first time.
Planning applications for some 121 towers were submitted in 2015, the equivalent of one every three days. The figure was boosted by Greenwich Peninsula developer Knight Dragon proposing a substantial uplift in units (and towers) at the SE10 scheme with 35 towers submitted within a single application.
Many areas across the capital saw towers submitted for the first time (at least in modern times), places like Acton, Southall, Harrow, Seven Sisters, Whitechapel, Somers Town, Brixton and Barking.
Wembley saw plans for its first tower of 20 storeys submitted in 2014. Developers then pounced with a total of eight towers put across Brent’s planning departments desks in 2015.
Last year’s total of 121 applications was up by 672% on the same figure for 2008; the year Boris Johnson became mayor of London.
