Lift-off for Rocket’s £215m Hackney tower plans

Developer Rocket Properties’ plans for a £215m, 27-storey mixed-use office block have been approved by Hackney Council, following changes made to address opposition from the community.

The proposals will create a development with around 363,000 sq ft of office space as well as 3,300 sq ft of retail on the ground floor across a seven-storey block at 201-207 Shoreditch High Street, E1, and a 27-storey tower at 1 Fairchild Street, E1, towards the rear of the site.

Recommending the plans for approval, planning officers said the scheme would provide a sustainable building in line with the amenity and design needs of the neighbourhood.

This, however, came after the colour and design of the proposed development, designed by architects AHMM, was changed following earlier objections from local parties, such as the neighbouring London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Although Tower Hamlets accepted some of its concerns were addressed, officers from the borough still expressed concerns that the building would “not be of exceptional architectural and design quality to justify its visual harm”.
