This month marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Just 50 years ago, people could be punished for just being who they are. For being their authentic self. It feels crazy now. Equal rights for people of all sexual orientations has come a long way over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Especially in real estate.
The property industry is working hard at diversity and inclusion. It is working hard to brush off its image as male, pale and stale and, of course, of laddishly straight.
It has come a long way but still has a long way to go. According to EG’s survey of the top agents last year, just 25% had set up a formal diversity programme. That is not enough. Especially in an industry, where access to talent is vital.
If companies want to attract the best talent, they have to be open and attractive to all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, colour, whatever.
Over the course of this week, EG is proudly sharing the stories of LGBT members of the industry, taking a look at the issues surrounding LGBT inclusivity, celebrating best practice and much, much more.
