Landowner thwarts ‘green route’ through Sussex

The government may have pledged that all households should be within 15 minutes of green and pleasant land, but a local landowner is blocking that in mid-Sussex.

Sir Richard Kleinwort has refused to give permission for a walking and cycling route between Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath that would cut across his land.

Other landowners have agreed to the plan, but Kleinwort argued that the path would affect the “1,200 pristine acres” of his Heaselands estate.

He has suggested alternative routes next to a railway line or through a flood plain.
