BUDGET 2016: The green light has been given to a host of infrastructure projects as the government seeks to rebalance Britain.
The go-ahead has been given to the High Spreed 3 rail link between Manchester and Leeds, a four-lane M62, a new tunnel road from Manchester to Sheffield, and upgrades to the A66 and A69.
“I said we would build the northern powerhouse. We are making it a reality and balancing our country,” said chancellor George Osborne. “This budget invests in infrastructure. We are making our country stronger.”
The go-ahead was also given for Crossrail 2 in London and a 0.5% increase in premium tax to raise £700m to boost the UK’s flood defences.
